Statistical and Data Management Training Courses available on an inhouse basis:
Multiple Regression Analysis using SPSS
Who is the course aimed at?
This course is aimed at researchers and post-graduate students in the social sciences
who want to use multiple regression to analyze their data. The course is designed to be
an introduction to the technique, building up from first principles (the idea of explaining
differences between respondents on one variable from their differences on another,
and the basic equation for a line) to more complex scenarios, such as multiple
predictor variables, handling categorical predictor variables (dummy coding),
and non-linear relationships.
Course level:
Some previous experience of using SPSS to perform basic statistical analysis is expected.
No previous experience of running multiple regression analysis in SPSS is required.
Course content and aims:
The course will cover the following topics:
Ideas behind and motivations for linear regression models
The theory and assumptions behind least-squares model fitting
Running simple regression models in SPSS
Interpreting output: test statistics and diagnostic plots
Models with multiple predictor variables
Hierarchical entry of predictors; controlling for background variables
Incorporating categorical variables as predictors by using dummy variables
Demonstrating that t-tests and ANOVA are just subtypes of linear regression
Extensions to the simple linear model
An introduction to moderated regression and interaction terms
The course comprises of a mixture of short lectures on the
basic theory behind the statistical techniques listed above, teaching via examples worked through by
the trainer on real data sets which participants can follow, and exercises to practice the
skills just learned. You will also receive a 70-page coursebook containing all the notes and worked examples,
providing an easy reference and reminder for the techniques you have learned.
Course timings:
The course fits comfortably into a full day, starting at 9.15am and finishing at around 5.30pm,
with a 45 minute lunch break, and short mid-morning and afternoon coffee breaks.
Transport timings for my return journey permitting, I am always willing to stay on for a while after the end of the course
to answer questions pertinent to participants' own data sets.
The teacher:
Dr Chris Stride has been using SPSS in his work as a statistician
and data manager for the last 2 decades. He has particular experience and expertise
in teaching non-statisticians from the fields of psychology, HR, management
and the social sciences. He is a member of the ASSESS (UK SPSS Users Group) Committee,
and runs courses for ASSESS, inhouse courses at UK Universities and
public sector institutions and public training courses based at the University of Sheffield.
